department. he is also a former marine and decorated police officer here in the county. >> heart goes out to them. it just pours out. we can't imagine what it's like losing one child, let alone two. >> reporter: kyle says a text message alerted them. his wife was unable to speak when she saw it. a close friend of their oldest son, gone, as well as his little brother. >> we've been inside the house. the family that you knew in the community lived there. it's -- it's tough to digest. >> reporter: outside the house where the lukens family lived, nothing is left. at 5:00 a.m. calls for help came in. while some made it out, two young boys, bryan jr. and his brother parker did not. their dad is a montgomery county sheriff's deputy, former marine and decorated police officer. he was injured. >> you could not ask for nicer people. >> reporter: dave bowman woke up to the noise and flashes of

light. he still can't imagine the loss. >> three of the nicest kids you would ever meet in your life. it's a shame. it hit me hard here. >> reporter: we can tell you according to family friends, counselors were on hand at the elementary school when kids arrived. investigators still trying to figure out what caused the fast-moving fire. many investigators were focusing towards the front lower end of the home there, digging up pieces, holding up wires, trying to figure out what could have caused this so early in the morning. reporting live in schwenksville, deanna durante, nbc10 news. >> thank you. to this now. a bitter blast has blanketed the region. nbc10 in havertown. these crossing guards tried their best to keep moving to stay warm. in newark, delaware, people were bundled up on main street. below freezing temperatures contributed to a little less than usual afternoon foot traffic, i imagine. we're tracking the chances

for snow tonight. it won't be a lot, but the flakes will be here in a few hours. the cold air and wind really hit you if you had to be outside at all today. >> it did. nbc10 first alert meteorologist tammie souza is tracking the cold and snow. >> this is the snow at mount pocono. you can see they are blowing snow but the winds are gusting which has contributed to the awful windchill. 19 at mount pocono. the windchill is 4 degrees. closer to home in philadelphia, you can see we have plenty of sunshine out there, the clouds will start to thicken in advance of the snow. 30 degrees right now. we made it up to 31 today. the feels-like, the windchill, is at 18. winds are out of the west at 18 minor, gusting enough to make us feel so chilly. first alert still in effect through the evening hours due to the dangerous cold. no snow in the area yet on doppler radar. it's moving into the western part of the state. pittsburgh reporting flakes

there. this is what you can expect through the evening hours. we will watch those temperatures continue to fall. they'll fall back into the 20s. by 8:00 we should be in the mid 20s across the area. teens in mount pocono. here comes the snow. it starts to move in. between about 8:00 and 10:00, we'll see snow across the area. not expecting heavy accumulations but we'll see some measurable snow. temperatures holding steady in the mid 20s. by the time you wake up tomorrow morning, looking at flurries out there, but it will still be extremely cold. we'll talk about the cold and the next batch of snow after this and exactly how much to expect in your neighborhood in a few minutes. nbc10's aundrea cline-thomas found out how the city is helping residents stay warm. she'll have a live report. close to a done deal. less than an hour ago republicans in the house and senate agreed on the tax plan.

>> republicans hope to vote in the senate first and then the house. both sides before next wednesday. today president trump called the tax bill, quote, the biggest thing we have worked on. if it is approved the corporate tax cut helps big and small business owners. most americans would see changes starting next year. the president says a family of four making $75,000 a year should save $2,000. mr. trump says he promised to overhaul the tax system and today says he is doing just that. >> now we are just days away, i hope, i hope -- you know what that means, right -- from keeping that promise and delivering a truly amazing victory for american families. >> democrats want congress to delay the vote until january. they want to wait for senator-elect doug jones to be sworn in next month after his victory in alabama's special

election last night. >> it would be wrong for senate republicans to jam through this tax bill without giving the newly elected senator from alabama the opportunity to cast his vote. >> now, if the tax bill passes, this will be president trump's first major accomplishment that he passed through congress. in the breaking news center, erin coleman, nbc10 news. back to the election surprise in alabama. this afternoon president trump is distancing himself from ray moore. a state that hasn't elected a democrat to the senate in 25 years. roy moore faced sexual molestation allegations throughout the race. early today the president tweeted, the reason i originally endorsed luther strange and his numbers went up mightily, is that i said roy moore will not be able to win the general election. i was right.

roy worked hard but the deck was stacked against him. another tweet reads, if last night's election proved anything, it proved that we need to put up great republican candidates to increase the razor thin margins in both the house and senate. doug jones becomes the first democrat to win an alabama senate seat since 1992. with republicans holding a two-vote majority in the senate his victory will have major consequences for president trump and his agenda. lauren mayk is on capitol hill right now getting reaction to the upset and the president's speech on tax reform. she'll have a live report at 5:00. to the escalating twitter tussle between president trump and a democratic critic calling for him to resign. kristen gil bra kristen gillibrand spoke to the "today" show. >> it was intended to silence me. i won't be silenced on this

issue. >> president trump tweeted that gillibrand begged him for a political contribution and would do anything to get it. some view the tweet as a sexual slur but the white house says it is not sexist. gillibrand a among a group of lawmakers calling for an investigation into president trump over past allegations of sexual misconduct. injured eagles quarterback carson wentz is recovering this afternoon after going under the knife. nbc10 confirmed that wentz had surgery in pittsburgh to repair the torn acl. he suffered the injury in sunday's win in l.a. nick foltz takes over as quarterback starting this sunday against the giants. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues. brand-new video showing the impact of a deadly hit-and-run overnight. >> you see the car at the top of the screen approaching the intersection when another car t-boned it. police hope this video will help lead to an arrest.

brandon hudson joins us live near the intersection. >> what did the people tell you? >> reporter: surveillance video shows a gray car. the driver plowed into a car at the intersection and the impact through the passenger from that car into this yard. the two people in the car that caused the crash ran away. in a split second, surveillance video shows the lives of three unsuspecting people are forever changed by another driver at a northeast philly intersection. a violent crash shows the passing car spin offscreen. the driver and passenger are okay. police say a third passenger sitting in the back seat flew out of it. >> lying in front of the tree. >> reporter: that passenger died at the hospital. >> the girl was crying, asking if the man on the ground was okay. >> reporter: priscilla heard the crash and ran to help. >> i tried to see what was going

on. >> reporter: she returned to the crash scene with her family this afternoon. a yard trashed with car parts and pieces of a picket fence. another look at the video from a nearby salon appears to show a driver run a stop sign on diston street before impact. a man gets out of the car. he limps across the street and the woman got out too. >> the woman from this car was dragging herself across the ground. >> the left side of her face was gushing blood. >> reporter: witnesses say they appeared hurt and panicked and took off before the cops arrived. >> she looked at me like she was confused. he said, come on, let's go and grabbed her hand. >> reporter: one of the witnesses say that crashes at this intersection are common. they'd like this intersection made safer. brandon hudson, nbc10 news. new details in the murder

case against two cousins accused of killing four young men in bucks county. then burying their bodies. the prosecutor put the possibility of the death penalty on the table for the two. lawyers for dinardo say their clients gave details of the murders in exchange for prosecutors not seeking the death penalty. the district attorney says he is covering his bases in case things change when the case goes to trial. the four were murdered in july. we asked our legal expert about the d.a.'s decision today. that's coming up at 5:00. the man charged in this week's terror attack on the new york subway system had his first hearing in the hospital where he is recovering from burns from the exploding pipe bomb strapped to his body. he faces federal terrorism charges. he is accused of setting off the bomb in a passageway during the monday morning rush. he could face life in prison.

this week marks five years since the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary in newtown, connecticut. 20 children and six teachers were shot and killed on that day. cease fire p.a. and local members against gun violence met. they talked about the importance of getting involved to stop gun violence. >> don't wait until something happens to get involved. get involved today to make a difference. because this is a pain that you never, ever get over. >> dorothy lost her son in 2001. he was shot seven times over a parking space. camden is the first stop for a national summit to stop opioid addiction at its source. nbc10 was at cooper hospital for the turn the tides summit. medical professionals and former professional athletes are working to find solutions to the pain management and opioid

epidemic. governor chris christie was the keynote speaker. >> unlike lots of other drug issues we have had over the course of our country's history, this did not start south of the border. this did not start on some street corner, this started in doctors' offices and hospitals all over this country. >> christie went on to say legal drugs are creating the real supply problem when it comes to opioids. 260 million prescriptions for opiates were written last year. a philadelphia police sargent is being honored for her valor after being shot multiple times. >> striking her in the left shoulder, arm and torso. >> she was the recipient of a sergeant robert wilson valor award in the northeast. several others who responded the

night young was shot also received awards. a gunman shot her eight times as she sat in her patrol car. police later killed the shooter. young is a 20-year veteran of the force. camden county police are taking extra precautions to make sure people stay safe in the dangerous cold. >> officers going door to door. they call it project guardian, checking on the disabled, elderly and other people who live alone to make sure they are keeping warm. >> we have a lot of elderly people who live alone and oftentimes can't help themselves. just checking in on them, making sure they are okay. >> police can't get to every home, so they are reminding you to keep checking on elderly or disabled relatives and neighbors. this cold blast of winter air is an event that truly gives people a warm and fuzzy feeling. nbc10 was at school district headquarters.

volunteers handing out hats, glovers and scarves to deserving children. people donated the clothes as part of the annual warmth in winter collection. our coverage of the cold air continues with aundrea cline-thomas. >> she joins us live from the christmas village in center city with more on how people are staying warm. >> reporter: guys, everybody today had to bundle up. i am talking about hats. i broke out my mittens. and even for some of these vulnerable populations, days like today can be downright dangerous. hot chocolate and a warm apple cider and so are the layers. >> warm scarf, socks, gloves, hat and lots of walking around. >> reporter: the cold weather even brought out a reindeer.

he chose to wear short sleeves manning the grill. >> when you're in the sun it's not bad. >> reporter: it was cozier inside the senior center. plummeting temperatures can be especially dangerous for older populations. >> as we get older we lose body fat. as a result of that we don't have a lot of insulation and the body is not producing heat the way it did when they were 20, 30 years younger. >> reporter: philadelphia's corporation for aging checks on its elderly clients and provides heating assistance during the winter months. still, people of all ages have to take this weather seriously. it doesn't take long for the bitter cold to pose a threat. >> the temperatures that we have at this point can easily cause frostbite, which can lead to so many other very serious medical problems leading down to amputation. >> reporter: this is very dangerous weather. if you do not have heat, you are advised to see if you can find a place that has heat where you

27. it's 30 in delaware. 30 in philadelphia. 30 south jersey. 31 along the jersey shore. we have enjoyed plenty of sunshine today but clouds are moving in ahead of the snow. right now in new hope, you are at 28. blue belle, 28. let's go to melbourne, 26. unionville, 28. oxford, 28 degrees in the suburbs. how about right here in philadelphia. not a whole lot warmer. at the airport it's 30. graduate hospital, 31. fox chase, 30. parkwood, 30. the temperature will be hovering below freezing. your neighborhood weather tonight. we'll see the snow moving in by about 8:00 to 10:00 tonight. it should move out in the wee hours of the morning. you'll wake up to about 34 in philadelphia. you will be very chilly before that time. in the pennsylvania suburbs, same thing. 30 at 6:00 in the morning. lehigh valley, you are only going to be in the 20s. you will still see snow flying there when you wake up.

we'll look at 34 in delaware, 33 in new jersey and 36 along the jersey shore. we'll still have winds that make it feel much chillier. doppler radar not picking up anything right now. clouds are in place. the snow is moving through pittsburgh, headed towards williamsport and harrisburg. you see the rotation of the area of low pressure moving through michigan right now and parts of indiana. the wind being pulled into it. and here is your hour by hour forecast, walking you through the evening in your neighborhood. by 8:30 we have dropped into the mid and lower 20s across philadelphia. and the suburbs may be hanging on to the upper 20s and 30s in south jersey and delaware. the first snow will start to fly in the pennsylvania suburbs and delaware, moving through at about 11:00 tonight, depositing maybe an inch or more in some spots. by 7:30 tomorrow morning. lingering flurries, starting out in the upper 20s. low 30s in south jersey and delaware and lower 20s for the

suburbs and lehigh valley. by tomorrow afternoon the winds turn back to the northwest. we climb but not far. we only make it into the low 30s. that shuts down the flow of any warmth that can come in, despite the sunshine. on friday morning we will already be starting out chilly. 2:30 in the morning, 20 in philadelphia. it might be our coldest morning yet. here is what you can expect snow total-wise. rapid precision forecast model, the in-house model. i would say 1 to 2 inches could be possible across parts of the area. other parts of the area picking up a dusting. a look at your ten-day on 10. temperatures are cold for the next few days. then we get a warmup. tomorrow maybe we'll look at temperatures in the mid 30s across the area. that's if the winds don't turn too soon. if they do we'll notch it down into the low 30s. 32 on friday. another chilly day. we start in the teens and low 20s. it will be a cold one to bundle up. look at this. near 40 on saturday.

this is nbc10 news. new york city is hard at work getting ready for one of the biggest parties of the year. today we get our first look at the 1 and 8 numbers that the world will see on new year's eve in times square. visitors got a chance to take pictures. organizers say security plans are in place for the large crowd expected on december 31st. you can ring in 2018 with nbc10. watch the sugar house casino's new year's eve fireworks here on nbc10. a team of firefighters in illinois are being hailed as heroes for saving this little guy and his owner. both fell through some thin ice on a lake. dressed in protective gear, firefighters made their way through icy waters. the dog's owner was cut into a

shooting. the nbc station in pittsburgh reports two people have been shot and the coroner has been called to the scene. the campus is located northwest of pittsburgh. according to reports, the calls first came in as shots fired at the cafeteria in the student union building. we'll gather new information and bring it to you as soon as we get it. right now at 4:30. nbc10 exclusive. for the second time in two weeks thieves targeted small-town pharmacies in south jersey. police are working to find out if the holdups are related. cydney long got video of the most recent crime. >> she joins us live. this time the thieves didn't even go for the cash. >> reporter: not at all. it was saturday night, about 9:15. police say two men wearing masks and also wearing gloves either had a hammer or a sledgehammer. they smashed the glass right here. their sole focus inside was aimed at stealing pills. after carefully casing the berlin pharmacy located along a

busy stretch of white horse pike, watch as the men use a hammer to smash a surveillance camera and break the front door glass. >> it's crazy that people are doing things like that. it's scary. >> reporter: they kicked in an interior door, pulling a backpack full of prescription drugs. the goal, prescription p painkillers. >> they were looking for narcotics. it's a hot thing right now, use it on the street. >> reporter: all high-end painkillers were discreetly locked away. >> at no point did they go to a cash register for money. they were targeting medication. >> reporter: it all unfolded in less than a minute. >> cash, pills, you shouldn't break into somebody's business. >> reporter: it comes five days after a winslow pharmacist fired his gun at two armed crooks at the pharmacy a few miles away. berlin police are comparing notes with winslow but don't

police academy. men and women were honored during a ceremony and special awards were given for academics, marksmanship and dedication. the penalty may be reduced for possessing a small amount of marijuana. some members want to make possession of a small amount of pot a summary offense. that would basically mean you get a ticket. it's currently a misdemeanor that could bring prison time. a delaware radio station is making the season brighter. wdel representatives were at costco to buy supplies with money that came in through the annual feed a friend food drive. the station raised nearly $10,000 during last week's drive. the supplies benefit five agencies throughout delaware. a senior airman has dancer bragging rights this afternoon ♪

this is an amazing story. a decision by a new mexico police officer not only changed his life but the life of a newborn. this is body-cam video from this officer who was responding to a robbery at a convenience store when he found a woman 8 months pregnant sitting beside the store shooting heroin at eight months pregnant. when he confronted the woman will doing drugs when she was pregnant she told him she hoped someone who adopt her child. that's when the officer made a life-changing decision. >> this is hope. she is a little sleepy right now. >> how did your other children respond? >> they love her. she is absolutely their sister. they just want to hug her and kiss her. >> the officer adopted baby hope. by the way, he already has four

a middle school in newcastle county apologizes after asking students to draw a mug shot of someone battling drug addiction. part of a worksheet called who is on drugs that sixth graders were asked to complete as a health assignment. the school's principal sent a letter to parents apologizing and admitted the assignment missed the mark for some families. here is a look at rush hour traffic across the region. if it feels like you are spending more time in the car going to and from work, the data backs it up. the study shows travel time between work and home is on the rise here in philadelphia. the average one-way commute time

there shopping. it could look like a winter wonderland later tonight with the chance for a little snow. we're talking about snow and air that's this cold and a grand that's really cold. it makes a big difference. >> it's not a great combination. it is best to be viewed through the windows of your home, coming down. that's a good place to be. you will be warm, you can watch the snow, feel festive. make cocoa. let's go outside. >> do we have to? >> we're going to go outside with our electronic window. a look first at philadelphia. pretty sunset with the clouds drifting in ahead of the snow. 30 degrees. feels-like of 18. that's the windchill on bare skin. in wilmington, 30 degrees with a feels-like of 18. gusty winds out of the west, 18 miles an hour. this morning it was 0 to 17 degrees. 26 for all of you in the pennsylvania suburbs right now.

30 in south jersey. 31 on the shore. let's go to the lehigh valley, check out temperatures there. in blandon, 26. hope well, 25. mertztown, 24. nazareth, 26 degrees. it feels a lot chillier than that outside. no snow on the doppler radar yet. we have clouds in place. the snow is making its way through pittsburgh. that's the first of several waves of snow that will come through tonight. as far as timing it out, you can see that this whole system stretches from the western portion of pennsylvania all the way back through indiana. so it's sort of going to come in several waves. you can make out the spin of this area of low pressure centered right over michigan. so let's time it out in your neighborhood, find out what's going to go on. we're going hyperlocal. let's start in south jersey and the shore. nothing by 7:00, 8:00. there we go. between 9:00 and 10:00 you'll see the snow start to cross the

area. we're not expecting anything along the atlantic. inland. places like vineland where you could pick up over an inch. cape may, atlantic city, talking about a dusting that will probably melt right away due to the warmer adjacent atlantic waters. now to delaware. many of the models don't have anything for you down here in bethany beach, georgetown. watching the time line here. this is one of the first places that the snow starts to cover. 8:00, 9:00, we'll be looking at it move through. not huge amounts. by 11:00, less than an inch across the area. the highest amounts would be up here near newark and wilmington. maybe even dover. an inch at most. now let's check out what's going on with philadelphia and the 'burbs. the time line. 8:00, nothing. by 9:00 we already have the snow moving across the area. look at the amounts. the models are conflicted. some say 1 to 2 inches in philadelphia, some say a little less. i would plan on this being

pretty close to it. east falls, a little over an inch. eastwick, philadelphia. up into the upper pennsylvania suburbs. we'll look at the lehigh valley. this is where we may see some of our higher amounts. some places exceeding 2 inches. that starts a little later, about 10:00. you could see anywhere from 2 to 3 inches placing like reading and into allentown. a look at your ten-day on 10. temperatures tomorrow. if we don't see the winds turn too early we'll see 37. if they turn to the north earlier we'll be in the lower 30s. 38 saturday. chance of rain sunday night, into monday. that's where we see the 40s. winter, it finally arrives. feels like it now but it arrives next thursday. join us tonight on nbc10 news at 11:00 for the latest track on any snow and bitter cold. right after the 75th anniversary golden globes special.

>> top honors for new jersey rockers bon jovi. the band will be inducted into the rock & roll hall of fame. they were formed in new jersey in 1983. the group led by jon bon jovi. he has had a lot of other ventures throughout his career. let's take a look. in 2004 he became the founder and owner of the philadelphia soul, of the arena football league. here he is celebrating their championship in 2008. he is also known for his philanthropic endeavors, named the first founding ambassador of the habitat for humanity program. also worked for the red cross. also he toured extensively on behalf of presidential candidate john kerry in 2004. in '08 he supported barack obama for president. his band will be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame on april 14th.
